First National Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy Moves Forward

The Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy research is a joint initiative funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Office of the Third Sector, Carnegie UK Trust and the Scottish Executive. The Centre’s total budget over 5 years will be £2.2 million. 

The Centre will take the form of a hub and spokes. The hub (the lead organisation) will work in close collaboration with expert groups (the spokes). The hub and spokes together will constitute the Centre. 

ESRC has now issued a call for proposals for the hub and the spokes. The call is for full proposals and the closing date for applications is August 14th 2007. It is hoped that contract negotiations and announcement of awards will be completed by the end of 2007.

U.S. and Indian philanthropists recognized for conviction, courage and sustained efforts. 

The Tata family of India, Eli Broad, Heinz and Mellon Families to receive the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy.

Carnegie Commission Calls for New Agenda for Rural Assets and Services

The Carnegie UK Trust's new report calls for more rural communities to take control of their own local assets and services. The Carnegie Commission for Rural Community Development’s report calls for assets ranging from housing, renewable energy supplies and sports clubs to be managed at a local level. The report also calls for a greater role for networks such as rural stress helplines, debt counselling and support groups for older people, which constitute ‘social’ assets.

Ed Miliband is Minister for the Third Sector. He was elected Labour MP for Doncaster North in May 2005.

Previously he was Chair of HM Treasury's Council of Economic Advisers, advising the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, on long–term policy development. Before that, as a special adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer after May 1997, he worked across a range of economic and social policy areas, including taxation, public spending, and labour market issues.

Will Hutton to speak at Inquiry/NCVO event on 17th July

Will Hutton is chief executive of The Work Foundation an independent, not for dividend research based consultancy which is the most influential voice on work, workplace and employment issues in Britain.

Will began his career as a stockbroker and investment analyst, before working in BBC TV and radio. Prior to joining The Work Foundation, Will spent four years as editor in chief of the Observer and Director of the Guardian National Newspapers. Will continues to write a weekly column for the Observer and more recently has contributed to The New York Observer, Washington Post and Boston Globe.

New RARP partners announced

Carnegie UK Trust and the Big Lottery are delighted to announce three new partners under the Rural Action Research Programme (RARP) theme - Building inclusive communities and three new partners under the RARP theme- Developing sustainable management of community assets.

These are:

  • North Wales Race Equality Netwrok (NWREN)

  • The Rural Media Company
  • Falkland Heritage Trust
  • Ruralnet/uk
  • The Development Trusts Association

First report of the European Citizens' Consultation - UK now available

On the weekend of the 24th and 25th March, the Power Inquiry hosted a deliberative event to debate the future of europe.  A cross-section of citizens from all over the UK were invited to listen to each other and refine their own views about the europe that they want to live in. 

The event was funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the Carnegie UK Trust, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the Barrow Cadbury Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Carnegie London office is recruiting an Office Manager

The Carnegie UK Trust wishes to appoint an Office Manager to work in its London office.  As part of a small team, the main purpose of this post is to manage the office and undertake a range of administrative, IT, financial and communications housekeeping tasks.  You will also support the work of the Trust’s Democracy and Civil Society Programme and the final stage of the Carnegie Young People’s Initiative, which includes managing the contacts database and assisting with organising events.  The successful candidate will be self-motivated, organised and have good attention to detail.

Participation Works appointed by the Big Lottery Fund

The Big Lottery Fund has announced a new partnership with the Participation Works consortium that will involve more young people in deciding how £76 million in lottery cash is spent over the next two years. 

Following the procurement process, the Fund has appointed Participation Works to provide support to organisations that want to put young people at the centre.
